CSY Community : Introducing Carol Newbigging

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOGA AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU PRACTICED?

I discovered yoga around 6 years ago while on vacation.  The all inclusive resort offered yoga classes as I had always been curious about yoga I decided to give it a try.  It was a great way to begin the day, thus my journey began.

When back from vacation I noticed a sign at the corner of Cornwall and Chartwell advertising CSY I immediately turned around and lucky for me it was open and I signed up on the spot.

I have to admit to being nervous and concerned about starting yoga later in life.  I was worried that I might not be able to keep up with the class.  Well here we are five years later.  I love my classes and with the guidance of the wonderful teachers at CSY you learn it is “your” yoga practice.

WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO PRACTICE YOGA?

I continue to practice yoga as it brings peace and well being to my life.  Not to mention how wonderful you feel at the end of a class. There are times on a cold dark winter night it would be easy to stay home but the knowing of how good I will feel at the end of the class motivates me to go.

HOW HAS YOUR YOGA PRACTICE SHAPED OR AFFECTED YOUR LIFE?

Yoga has helped me learn to slow down; if I feel stressed I practice breathing techniques and meditate for a few minutes

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR YOGA PRACTICE?

I love that I can do it….  I love that in my mid sixties I am learning and enjoying such a satisfying practice.

WHAT KEEPS BRINGING YOU BACK TO YOUR MAT?

It is my sanctuary it brings me peace while challenging me.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACE WHEN YOU ARE ON YOUR MAT?

The greatest challenge I have is to listen to my body and not try and push the pose. Your body will respond differently every time

WHAT IS THE GREATEST TEACHING THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED AS A RESULT OF YOUR YOGA PRACTICE?

The greatest teaching is the fact that it is never too late to start a yoga practice. The benefits are unlimited.

HOW DOES YOUR YOGA PRACTICE CHANGE FROM DAY TO DAY OR YEAR TO YEAR?

My yoga changes as I continue to learn and expand from the various teachers at CSY.  I find that I always learn something from each class whether it be restorative, mindfulness etc.  I incorporate my learning’s to my own practice at home.

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE AT CREATING SPACE YOGA STUDIO?

I practice at CSY as I find it the perfect studio for me.  The teachers are wonderful so informed and truly seem to love what they do. I enjoy the company and humour of fellow classmates, also the variety of classes and workshops.  I have to give a shout out to the walking classes, again never too late to start it is an amazing feeling as you learn to power walk it is like gliding along your route.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE YOGA ASANA/POSE AND WHY?

As for favourite poses I have many, anything containing a back bend, inversions and of course restorative poses they all feel so good….

      • I love seeing friendships grow at CSY and I love to watch our yoga community strengthen. This brings to mind the word “Ubuntu”. An African philosophy that “affirms that a person is a person through other people, that we are all related, interdependent and connected to each other. This is similar to what we know as compassion, compassion for ourselves, our families, our community, the global community and the earth”.

This is what I love about friendship and community. And I feel blessed to watch it grow at CSY!!
